No Nigerian Infected With Ebola Virus - Health Ministry

EBOLA

Nigerians have been advised to be calm and not panic over the reported case of Ebola Virus in Lagos State, with an assurance that no Nigerian is infected with the virus.

The Sierra Leonean doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients has also died.

Dr Sheik Umar Khan (pictured above), who was hailed as a national hero for disregarding his own health and helping sick patients, died yesterday July 29th from the disease after being diagnosed with the virus last week.

He contacted the virus despite wearing protective gear when treating patients.

In an interview last month, the 39yr old doctor had expressed fears for his life because of his constant contact with Ebola patients.

"I am afraid for my life. Health workers are prone to the disease because we are the first port of call for somebody who is sickened by the disease.

Even with the full protective clothing you put on, you are at risk" He told Reuters

His death comes days after a senior doctor at Liberia's largest hospital, Samuel Brisbane, died on Saturday at an Ebola treatment centre in Monrovia. 3 nurses working in the same Ebola treatment centre alongside Khan also died from the disease last week. Several other medics have been infected.

Patrick Sawyer and wife

The Ebola victim (Patrick Sawyer, 40) from Liberia who sparked fears of the 'Ebola' outbreak in Lagos, was actually an American. He was planning to return home to Coon Rapids, Minnesota, to be reunited with hischildren for two of his daughters' birthdays in August.

Patrick and his wife, are originally from Liberia and have family in the US and West Africa.

Back home in Minnesota, his devastated wife, Decontee is reeling from the news that her husband has passed away.

'I have three daughters who will never get to know their father,' Decontee Sawyer said in an interview with the Pioneer Press.

Recalling her husband, Decontee said he was 'larger than life' and that she is stills shocked that someone so strong could have their life ended so suddenly.

Sawyer, who worked for the Liberian Finance Ministry married his wife Decontee in December 2008, in Coon Rapids.

The couple, who both hold US citizenship are originally from Liberia and Decontee arrived in the country with her family in 1991 and Patrick came in the early 2000s.

The couple are part of the large Liberian community in Minnesota, who moved there in the aftermath of the nation's two civil wars in the 1980s and late 1990s.

His job had taken him back to West Africa to promote economic development there and he was last in the United States in September said Decontee.

His long absences away from home had become common and before he boarded the plane to Lagos last week he had been caring for a sister who was ill with what was revealed to be Ebola, although according to Decontee, he and his family did not know that at the time....he didn't know!

Decontee learned he was ill with Ebola on Thursday and then on Friday she was told her husband of six years had passed away from the virus.

Distraught, Decontee said that she had come forward to share her husband's fate so that the public can understand how quickly the virus can spread.

I will sell Mikel, Torres or Cech – Mourinho

mikel obi
Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho has declared that Nigerian midfielder, John Obi Mikel, could be on his way out of the club.

Mikel has been consistently linked with a move away from Chelsea but it seems the arrival of Ivorian marksman, Didier Drogba, has finally sounded the death knell on the time of the Nigerian at the club.

The return of Drogba means Chelsea’s anticipated first-team squad has one too many foreign playersunder Premier League and Champions League rules relating to the home-grown quota.

Clubs can only name 17 foreign players over the age of 21 in their official 25-man squads and Chelsea have 18 overseas stars who are realistically vying for those places.

British newspaper, Telegraph, reports that Mourinho has decided that one of Fernando Torres, Peter Cech or Mikel will be asked to leave the club this summer.

“From the group you are expecting us to have as a squad, I have to send one away because we have one extra foreign player.

“So from all these players, if you think all of them have to stay, you are wrong. One of them has to go,”Mourinho said.

Mikel has made over 200 league appearances since joining Chelsea in 2006.

Iheanacho Scores Again For Manchester City

Nigerian teenager Kelechi Iheanacho has scored his second goal for Manchester City in as many matches as the English Premier League champions cruised to a 5-1 triumph over Italy’s AC Milan on Sunday in the US.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men had stormed into an early 2-0 lead thanks to strikes from Stevan Jovetic in the 11th minute and Scott Sinclair in the 14th, the two making the most of a Milan defense that struggled with Manchester City’s pace down the right flank.
